Roof Tiles Assembly

On this page we explain how to assemble roof tiles (bitumen shingles) on your new or used log cabin, garden shed, summerhouse or wooden garage. It is not very difficult job, but it is very important to work precisely

Sometimes a small deviation in colour can occur between the tiles in the same or in different packages. This is not a material defect, but is actually designed to increase the decorative beauty of the completed roof. In order to reduce colour difference during installation of the tiles, it is recommended to mix tiles from packages at random in order to create a mixed colour effect.

Each package of tiles contains 3 m² of coverage (including overlap). When calculating the amount of material needed to cover the roof, it is necessary to evaluate the quantity of tiles required depending on the complexity, angle of slope and size of the roof. Please remember to include extra tiles required for wastage (between 5 - 15% extra) in your calculation, as it is always better to have too much than too little. Spare tiles, if stored correctly, can be used to repair any damaged areas in the future

Every tile should be nailed to the roof boards with wide-headed galvanised roof tack nails. The number of nails depends on the pitch and slope of your roof. It is very important not to over hit the nails. They should be nailed in such a way that the head of the nail head is flush with the tile, but not below the surface. The head of the nail should not puncture the surface of the tile.

Installation should be performed against the prevailing direction of the wind.

Step: A

BBefore assembling the roof tiles, first assemble both eaves of the roof. These are provided in our packages.

First step tile assembly:    Assemble the first tile in the opposite direction, as shown in figure A. It is important to let the first tile hang over the roof edge by 0.5 cm.

Step: B

Start by assembling the tiles in the front, working backwards. Then work from the back moving forward. Below are two figures in colour showing the correct way of positioning the roof tiles.

Step: C

Every tile should be nailed to the roof boards with wide-headed galvanised roof tack nails. The number of nails depends on the pitch and slope of your roof. It is very important not to over hit the nails. They should be nailed in such a way that the head of the nail head is flush with the tile, but not below the surface. The head of the nail should not puncture the surface of the tile.

Step: D

When you reach the ridge of the roof, both sides of the tiles should be covered with one another. Then cut the lower pieces of the tiles. See Figure D.

Step: E

Attach the tiles that have been cut off to the ridge of the roof. See Figure E.

Pattern

Make sure that the individual tiles are not overlapping, to cover the darker colour section. Please refer to the figures for the correct spacing of the tiles. If you assemble the tiles with a larger overlap than recommended you will not have enough tiles to complete your roof! If outside temperature is below 15oC, tiles should be kept warm (inside) for 24 hours before installation, to ensure waterproofing.

The cost of extra tiles and their delivery will be charged to the customer.
